Peacebuilding Program and Establishment of Peace Clubs

(September 2025)

In September 2025, we carried out a peacebuilding program in secondary and high schools in Bertoua. Schools are not only centers of learning but also communities where values and character are shaped. With increasing social tensions and conflicts affecting young people globally, it is crucial to provide learners with the tools to manage conflict constructively and promote peaceful coexistence.

The International Day of Peace (21st September) offered an opportunity to engage students meaningfully in discussions and activities around peace. Establishing Peace Clubs helps nurture a generation of peace ambassadors who can positively influence their peers, families, and communities.

Activities

  • Sensitization sessions on peacebuilding and conflict resolution.
  • Official launch of Peace Clubs in selected secondary and high schools.
  • Training workshops on communication, mediation, and leadership skills.
  • Student-led peace campaigns including songs, poems, art, and debates.
  • Commemoration of the International Day of Peace through poems, songs, sketches, and award of prizes.

However, we are looking forward to establishing Peace Clubs in all secondary and high schools in Bertoua, the East Region, and eventually across Cameroon.

Objectives

The objectives of this peacebuilding program were aimed at:

  • Raising awareness among students on the importance of peace, dialogue, and unity.
  • Equipping students with practical skills for conflict management and resolution.
  • Providing a platform for student-led initiatives that foster peace and mutual respect.
  • Celebrating the International Day of Peace through creative and participatory activities.
  • Strengthening school-community engagement in promoting peaceful coexistence.
  • Conducting monthly follow-up visits to ensure Peace Clubs are well animated and effectively managed throughout the 2025–2026 academic year.

Expected Outcomes

  • Students are imparted with knowledge and skills in peacebuilding and conflict resolution.
  • Functional Peace Clubs are created and established in secondary and high schools in Bertoua, and progressively in the East Region and Cameroon at large.
  • Increased willingness among students to engage in and promote peace and tolerance.
  • A safer and more harmonious school environment is fostered.
  • A lasting culture of peace is created, extending beyond schools into the wider community.
  • Peace Clubs are well animated and managed throughout the academic year and become permanent school clubs nationwide.
